Neurodiversity Affirmative Practice

Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world and those around them in many different ways. Neurodivergence encompasses the natural variations in how people's brains function (prioritize and sometimes discriminates) and process information, including conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. There is no one 'right' way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits.

ā€‹

True Neurodiversity Affirmative Practice recognizes that neurological differences are natural variations, not deficits. It focuses on understanding and appreciating an individual's unique strengths and challenges, fostering self-acceptance, and adapting environments to support their needs. We avoid labeling differences as "disorders" and instead prioritize collaboration, respect, and a genuine curiosity to understand each person's experience.ā€‹ā€‹

ā€‹

Why Seek a Neurodivergence Assessment?

A neurodivergence assessment can lead to self-understanding, access to support services, and effective strategies for managing challenges associated with neurodivergence.ā€‹

ā€‹

How Do We Conduct Assessments Affirmatively?

Our assessments prioritize a strengths-based, person-centered approach. We acknowledge the impact of social barriers on individuals and recognize that challenges can arise from a mismatch between the individual and their environment, particularly when allistic expectations and norms are dominant. Our clinicians receive strong training in the affirmative paradigm and are trained to recognize allistic biases and harm. They are dedicated to being mindful, respectful, and avoid judgment during the assessment process. We use language that reflects the preferences of the neurodivergent community and empower individuals to understand and embrace their unique neurotype.

ā€‹

How Can a Neurodivergence Assessment Help?
At Sprout Psychology, our assessment aims to foster self-awareness, acceptance, and access to appropriate support, empowering individuals to navigate their unique challenges and leverage their strengths.
