What is Autism?
In a gist, autism is a natural variation in human development, a unique way of experiencing and interacting with the world under the broad umbrella of neurodiversity. Autistic individuals may communicate, learn, and process information differently from allistic individuals, leading to both unique strengths and challenges as they navigate a world often not designed for them. While they may experience difficulties with social communication, sensory sensitivities, and navigating social expectations, their passions, persistence, and unique perspectives can lead to significant contributions and enrich the tapestry of human experience.

Why We Avoid referring to 'ASD'
We avoid the term "ASD" (Autism Spectrum Disorder) because it focuses on the medical model of disability, implying a deficit or disorder. Instead, we use identity-first language ("Autistic") to respect the preferences of the neurodivergent community and emphasize that autism is an inherent part of a person's identity, not a separate condition.

What is Allistic?
Allistic refers to individuals who are not on the autism spectrum. It is a neutral descriptor that avoids potentially negative connotations associated with terms like "neurotypical" or "normal." By using "allistic," we create a more inclusive language that recognizes and respects both neurodivergent and non-autistic experiences.

Our Assessments
Our assessments are designed to be thorough and insightful. We use a combination of approaches, including qualitative diagnostic tool that helps assess individuals for Autism by using a person-centred and dialectical approach (Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum, Second Edition; MIGDAS-2). A caregiver or family member can usually attend in these interviews to help individuals feel at east.

For younger children, we may use a standardised diagnostic tool (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition; ADOS-2) to evaluate and interpret behaviour and interaction between the assessor and the child, looking at their communication styles, social interaction and play.

We ensure you are in good hands when engaged with us. We heavily emphasize on subsequent support after the assessment, so you will not have to feel left hanging. Our commitment to you goes beyond the assessment. We're here to provide continued support and help you navigate any next steps, including applying for the NDIS or DSP.
